daphoenus, rest of family, called bear dog because had characteristics of both bears , dogs. these animals size of present day coyote. daphoenus vetus largest species. male skulls reach 20 cm in length. daphoenus had short legs, , make quick sprints; not capable of running long distances. thought these animals ambushed prey, , did scavenging. fossil footprints suggested that, present-day bears, these animals walked in flat-footed way. daphoenus dug burrows offspring stay in , hide prey.
