similar event programmes @ olympics, paralympics , world championships, track , field forms significant part of continental championships. south american championships in athletics, created in 1919, first continental championships , european athletics championships became second championships of type in 1934. asian athletics championships , african championships in athletics created in 1970s , oceania started championships in 1990.

there indoor continental competitions in europe (european athletics indoor championships) , asia (asian indoor athletics championships). there has not been consistent championships of north america, may (in part) due success of both central american , caribbean championships , usa outdoor track , field championships. countries have national championship in track , field and, athletes, these play role in gaining selection major competitions. countries hold many track , field championships @ high school , college-level, develop younger athletes. of these have gained significant exposure , prestige, such ncaa track , field championship in united states , jamaican high school championships. however, number , status of such competitions vary country country.
