the programme 1883 birmingham senior cup final between old uns , aston villa


the first began life wednesbury literary & athletic institute in october 1874, adopting more familiar title of wednesbury old athletic club (woac short) following year. woac became founder member of birmingham & district football association in december 1875 , won inaugural birmingham cup competition, defeating stafford road 3–2 in 1877 final. success repeated 2 years later, , in 1880, having joined staffordshire football association, old athletic won staffs cup, beating aston villa 2–1 in final. club played in fa cup of 1881–82 , reached quarter finals, beating aston villa 4 goals 2 on way. lost 13–0 villa in cup on 30 october 1886 (still villa s biggest ever win) , later knocked out of competition blackburn rovers. old uns played in tournament in every season eventual demise in 1893, never matched performance of first season, , failed progress beyond qualifying rounds after 1888. wednesbury old athletic played in birmingham & district league 1890 1891, before joining midland league following 2 seasons. after narrowly missing out on midland league championship in 1892 club s fortunes declined. wednesbury unable support professional club , old athletic disbanded in july 1893. second club formed ashes of first, career brief. unable obtain use of regular home ground, club withdraw walsall junior league half way through season , subsequently folded.


the third club began life wednesbury excelsior in around 1891. existed in local football, playing cup ties , friendlies, before joining west midlands amateur league in 1896. finishing runners-up @ first attempt, club joined walsall & district league in 1897 , adopted title of wednesbury old athletic. woac spent 10 seasons in league, winning title in 1900 & 1905, , staffordshire junior cup 3 times in 6 seasons, various other local cup competitions. in 1907 wednesbury old athletic joined birmingham combination, spending 3 seasons there before joining professional birmingham & district league. here, club pitted against future football league clubs crewe alexandra, kidderminster harriers, shrewsbury town, stoke city, walsall & wrexham, in addition reserve sides of aston villa, birmingham city, coventry city, west bromwich albion & wolverhampton wanderers.the old uns never finished higher 12th out of 18th in league, , left competition in 1924 following sixth consecutive application re-election. club dropped down birmingham combination, after collecting single point 12 fixtures old athletic withdrew competition , disbanded.
