since 1897, northampton town had played home games @ county cricket ground, sharing northamptonshire county cricket club. because of larger size of cricket pitch, football ground had stands on 3 sides. northampton town chose construct own stadium, more suitable football, in sixfields area of northampton.


the stadium had been scheduled opened @ start of 1994–95, not ready on time , result northampton began season still @ county ground. first game played @ sixfields against barnet in division 3 on 15 october 1994. match ended in 1–1 draw, striker martin aldridge scoring first goal @ new stadium.


because of rent dispute between owners of coventry city , landlords of home ground, ricoh arena, coventry started groundshare northampton in 2013–14 season. arrangement due continue 3 seasons, in september 2014 coventry returned playing @ ricoh arena.
