located @ head of alberni inlet, port alberni lies adjacent natural harbour somass river. other end of inlet located on barkley sound, includes broken group islands, considered 1 of best areas kayaking in world.sproat lake located 10 km west of city, , valley guarded snow-covered peaks of beaufort range, mount arrowsmith , mount klitsa, , surrounded mountains on sides. kuth-kah-chulth, nuu-chah-nulth name mount arrowsmith.

the city owes unique layout former twin city status, due 2 official city centres, numerous creeks , ravines bisect townsite. former city of alberni dubbed north port , , centered @ highway 4 , gertrude street. visitors continuing onward west coast pass intersection, marked historic alberni post office on southeast corner. of port alberni s recent development has occurred in north port area, hill , east of north port downtown.


the former city of port alberni (now referred south port or uptown ) can found 3 km south on 3rd , argyle street. in 2004, capitol theatre, local landmark in south port, underwent extensive renovations , emerged stately yet modern relic of past times. theatre hosts live performances. south port anchored harbour quay, waterfront collection of shops, art galleries, great food , parks. port alberni railway station, farmers market on saturdays, maritime discovery centre can found here.


the city s west end eclectic mix of new suburban style homes, large acreages, , 2 first nations reserves. of residential growth on past decade has occurred in city s west end, westporte neighbourhood has taken shape.


the creeks , ravines cut through city create natural barriers; kitsuksis creek, cherry creek, roger creek , dry creek each flow through city. hiking trails in these creeks , ravines add tremendously quality of life in port alberni.

port alberni s dry july gives warm-summer mediterranean climate (koppen csb), although wetter such places. although summer months see relatively small amount of precipitation, vast majority of comes during winter months cool, moist air flows pacific ocean on colder b.c. coast. despite location on relatively dryer east side of vancouver island, resulting weak rain shadow not enough keep city dry.


the highest temperature ever recorded in port alberni 106 °f (41.1 °c) on 15 july 1941. coldest temperature ever recorded −7 °f (−21.7 °c) on 14 january 1950.
