mooney joined shamrock rovers, first senior club, in 2000, while pupil in coláiste Éanna, in dublin. , scored in every round when rovers won u17 ireland title against kingdom boys in 2002. made first team debut coming on sub against longford town on 6 april 2004. first goal came on 24 june 2004 against doomed dublin city. in fifteen months in first team scored 9 goals in 40 total appearances.

on 3 july 2015 mooney signed two-year deal league 1 side southend united, moving on free transfer. mooney scored first goal southend, penalty, against coventry city on 31 august 2015. re-signed leyton orient on 30 june 2017.
