while in boston, richman formed modern lovers, proto-punk garage rock band. other notable members of group keyboard player jerry harrison , drummer david robinson, later joined talking heads , cars, respectively.
in 1972 recorded series of demos producer john cale (formerly of velvet underground). among these songs seminal roadrunner , pablo picasso released on group s post-breakup album, modern lovers (august 1976). album strange time, featuring velvets-influenced basic three-chord rock ( roadrunner — based on 2 chords – homage sister ray ) @ time when glam , progressive rock norm.
later in 1972, group recorded producer kim fowley; these demos released in 1981 original modern lovers. despite playing live regularly, modern lovers had difficult time securing recording contract. late 1973, richman wanted scrap recorded tracks , start again mellower, more lyrical sound, influenced laid-back local music had heard when band had residency @ inverurie hotel in bermuda earlier in year. stymied efforts complete debut album, , led breakup of original modern lovers in february 1974.
