the ruhr has 1 of densest motorway networks in of europe, dozens of autobahns , similar schnellstraßen (expressways) crossing region. autobahn network built in grid network, 4 east-west (a2, a40, a42, a44) , 7 north-south (a1, a3, a43, a45, a52, a57, a59) routes. a1, a2 , a3 used through traffic, while other autobahns have more regional function.


both a44 , a52 have several missing links, in various stages of planning. missing sections in construction or planned constructed in near future.


additional expressways serve bypasses , local routes, around dortmund , bochum. due density of autobahns , expressways, bundesstraßen less important intercity traffic. first autobahns in ruhr opened during mid-1930s. due density of network, , number of alternative routes, traffic volumes lower other major metropolitan areas in europe. traffic congestion everyday occurrence, far less in randstad in netherlands, polycentric urban area. important autobahns have 6 lanes, there no eight-lane autobahns in ruhr.
