after qualifying main draw of 2007 northern ireland trophy beating barry pinches in deciding frame, o brien went on beat dave harold in first round of main draw. victories on john higgins (in decider), barry hawkins , ronnie o sullivan, before reached second ranking-event final of career beating mark allen 6 frames 3. lost final stephen maguire, 5–9. run helped him return top 32 of snooker world rankings 2007/2008, part of 2008/2009 season proved disappointing, o brien not reaching last sixteen of of first 4 tournaments.


as of end of 2009 o brien had compiled 101 competitive century breaks in career.


he qualified players tour championship 2011/2012 – finals held in galway lost last 24 match 0–4 joe perry.


on 12 april 2017, o’brien qualified 2017 world snooker championship after record-breaking victory in final qualifying round match against dave gilbert. final frame set record longest frame of modern era, lasting 123 minutes , 41 seconds.
