history
original construction

md 32 northbound in sykesville


when maryland state roads commission (mdsrc), predecessor of mdsha, laid out original state road system in 1909, commission included roads westminster taneytown , west friendship westminster via eldersburg. these highways contained several stretches of improved highway; main street in westminster , highways 1 mile (1.6 km) on either side of gamber , 2 miles (3.2 km) on either side of sykesville paved 1910. in addition, designated state roads included 2 turnpikes: westminster , meadow branch turnpike operated western city limit of westminster northwest fountain valley on road taneytown; , westminster , fenby turnpike operated southern city limit of westminster fenby.


in 1911, whole highway west friendship eldersburg completed after addition of 14-foot (4.3 m) wide macadam sections on either side of existing paved road through sykesville. same year, construction began on state road between eldersburg , fenby. roads eldersburg existing paved road through gamber , gamber fenby completed 14-foot (4.3 m) wide macadam surface in 1912 , 1913, respectively. road fountain valley taneytown paved 14-foot (4.3 m) wide concrete road fountain valley through frizzelburg in 1914 , there taneytown in 1915. former turnpikes still remained improved in 1915; roads resurfaced macadam 1919 complete original state road west friendship taneytown.


the next portion of become md 32 constructed extension of taneytown road northwest through emmitsburg, planned 1915. sections taneytown monocacy river , river 3 miles (4.8 km) west toward emmitsburg completed 14-foot (4.3 m) wide concrete road 1919. remaining 2 miles (3.2 km) emmitsburg underway 1920 , built 15-foot (4.6 m) wide concrete road 1921. highway completed emmitsburg northwest pennsylvania state line 1923. when mdsrc started assigning numbers state roads in 1927, highway us 40 in west friendship pennsylvania state line northwest of emmitsburg designated md 32.



the portion of md 32 glenelg savage designated md 106. highway paved in concrete dayton clarksville , clarksville 1 mile (1.6 km) west of middle patuxent river near simpsonville 1923. same year, concrete road added south west friendship middle patuxent river. concrete road clarksville extended middle patuxent river opposite simpsonville in 1925. macadam road built atholton oakland mills road in guilford between 1924 , 1926. guilford connected us 1 near savage gravel road 1927. gap in md 106 through simpsonville filled concrete road in 1929 , 1930. md 32 extended southwest middle patuxent river north of glenelg around 1933. md 106 extended north dayton glenelg macadam road in 1934. gap in highway north of glenelg filled 1946, time md 32 had been extended south , east on course of md 106 savage.


improvements

the first major improvement original course of md 32 replacement of highway s one-lane covered bridge on monocacy river wider triple-span concrete arch bridge in 1925. highway widened 20 feet (6.1 m) westminster east of taneytown 1930 , taneytown pennsylvania state line 1934. md 32 reconstructed , widened again emmitsburg pennsylvania state line in 1948 , through taneytown in 1949. when us 40 relocated four-lane divided highway through west friendship in 1951, new highway placed on bridge on md 32 , two-way ramp added connect grade-separated highways. md 32 relocated between eldersburg , louisville , new bridge constructed on morgan run in 1952 replace old road have been submerged filling of liberty reservoir.

in 1956, portion of md 32 fenby north westminster , westminster west through taneytown , emmitsburg pennsylvania state line renumbered md 97, had been extended north howard county. portion of md 32 md 26 in eldersburg md 97 in fenby transferred county maintenance @ same time. in 1960, road eldersburg fenby returned state highway system. in addition, md 97 moved new alignment, new washington road; new alignment ran fenby us 140, connected baltimore gettysburg, in westminster. md 97 followed westminster bypass northwest side of city. subsequently, md 32 extended along original alignment through westminster md 97 near western maryland college (now mcdaniel college). md 32 later assigned original alignment fountain valley east of taneytown when md 97 s new alignment between 2 communities completed in 1965. disjoint segment of md 32 renumbered md 832 in 1978. in 1979, us 140 decommissioned; highways baltimore westminster , westminster through emmitsburg became md 140. md 97 moved present course westminster toward gettysburg. md 32 s northern terminus rolled md 31 around 1987. state highway truncated @ westminster city limit in 2001 following reconstruction of main street , transfer city maintenance.


md 32 reconstructed , widened sykesville eldersburg starting in 1957 , west friendship south of sykesville in 1958. state highway s bypass of sykesville completed in 1963; old road through center of sykesville became md 851. md 32 s new bridge across patapsco river longest of 3 aluminum triangular box beam girder bridges constructed in united states. girder system topped concrete slab deck , underlain standard concrete abutments , piers , steel bearing pads on aluminum girders rested. these bridges, designed fairchild engine , airplane company, constructed of aluminum due metal s light weight similar strength compared steel. many experimental aluminum bridges built due severe shortage of steel in 1960s. aluminum bridges constructed because more expensive steel , concrete bridges.


in 1990s, mdsha discovered bridge s rarity while conducting bridge inventory. inventory found premature deterioration of supports due galvanic corrosion involving steel bearing pads , aluminum girder structure. because repairing structure have been extremely difficult, mdsha decided build replacement bridge west of aluminum bridge; new bridge opened in 2004 along slight relocation in md 32 on both sides of bridge. aluminum bridge added state s historic bridge registry , left in place historic landmark after md 32 s new bridge on patapsco river opened.


patuxent freeway

in 1956, md 32 extended east on guilford road us 1 howard – anne arundel county line @ annapolis junction. state highway relocated present alignment glenelg clarksville between 1961 , 1964, bypassing ten oaks road. md 32 expanded four-lane divided highway in west friendship when interchange i-70 reconstructed diamond interchange in 1973. md 32 extended east anne arundel county in 1969 when designation extended east of baltimore–washington parkway on edge of fort george g. meade. first 2 sections of become patuxent freeway opened in 1972. short section of divided highway opened west of oakland mills road in guilford turnaround west of vollmerhausen road included md 32 s modern interchange i-95. other section two-lane road md 175 in odenton northeast along sappington station road , east along current alignments of md 32 , i-97 md 178 east of i-97 exit 5 in crownsville. eastern section, 1972 1977 1 of 3 disjoint sections of mainline md 32 between crownsville , taneytown, included interchange md 3 in millersville. of 1978, md 32 s interchange baltimore–washington parkway partial cloverleaf interchange 4 ramps on north side of md 32—due state highway closely paralleling baltimore & ohio railroad s spur military base—and fifth ramp northbound parkway eastbound md 32. md 3 interchange included ramps , md 32 in direction of fort meade plus ramp westbound md 32 northbound md 3. other movements made via md 178 or millersville road.


construction on patuxent freeway resumed in 1981 in howard county. freeway opened dorsey run road us 29 in 1985. freeway extended across middle patuxent river tie existing two-lane road near cedar lane 1987. new highway extended east dorsey run road west of baltimore–washington parkway four-lane divided highway same year. sections of md 32 s old alignment became part of md 732. highway dorsey run road parkway upgraded freeway completion of interchanges @ dorsey run road , ramp guilford road in 1991. interchange between md 32 , baltimore–washington parkway upgraded full cloverleaf around 1993. final section of patuxent freeway in howard county opened west of us 29 west of md 108 in 1996.


i-97 under construction annapolis millersville 1987. when section of interstate completed in 1989, highway took on portion of md 32 md 178 md 3. easternmost portion of md 32 became i-97 s exit 5 interchange ramps; md 3 interchange upgraded provide full access. in 1989, construction began on md 32 between baltimore–washington parkway , i-97. md 32 extended four-lane divided highway along existing road parkway east md 198 , two-lane road on new alignment md 198 md 175. sections of md 32 md 198 md 175 west of odenton , burns crossing road i-97 under construction expand them freeway; freeway segment md 175 burns crossing road on north side of odenton under construction. freeway between md 198 , md 175 complete 1991. remainder of patuxent freeway fort meade millersville completed in 1993.


in 2000, construction began on gap in patuxent freeway through fort george g. meade. md 32 s interchanges md 198 , samford road completed in 2002. md 198 project involved extending latter highway east along northern edge of tipton airport md 198 tie fort s mapes road entrance; mapes road intersection east of md 198 eliminated construction. patuxent freeway through fort meade finished when md 32 s interchange canine road completed in 2005.


sykesville road upgrade

mdsha has long-term plans upgrade md 32 four-lane freeway md 108 i-70. first project, involved constructing modified dumbbell interchange connect md 32 burntwoods road, ten oaks road, pfefferkorn road, , ivory road in glenelg, completed in 2008. next project involved construction of diamond interchange @ linden church road, which, before dumbbell interchange completed in fall of 2013, met md 32 @ pair of signalized, three-way directional crossover intersections between glenelg , clarksville. several other interchanges constructed or modified:



at mdsha s dayton shop south of glenelg, half-diamond interchange built on southbound side of md 32 , right-in/right-out interchange constructed northbound md 32 traffic access maintenance facility.
north of glenelg, rosemary lane extended west cross on md 32. county highway connected md 32 via right-in/right-out interchanges between state highway , frontage roads.
in west friendship, northbound md 32 have half of partial cloverleaf interchange md 144. access between md 144 , southbound md 32 via right-in/right-out interchange frontage road. md 144 s intersections frontage road , ramps , northbound md 32 roundabouts.
md 32 s interchange i-70 transformed diamond interchange partial cloverleaf interchange free-flowing ramps md 32 i-70.
