by 1880 flourishing jewish community in birmingham centred on synagogue. men organised collective action defend reputation , promote interests of community. rituals regarding funerals , burials brought rich , poor, men , women. intermarriage outside community uncommon. however, arrival of east european jews after 1880 caused split between older, assimilated, middle-class anglicized jews , poorer new immigrants spoke yiddish.


by 1882, 46,000 jews lived in england and, 1890, jewish emancipation complete in every walk of life. since 1858, parliament has never been without practicing jewish members. synagogues built openly, across country large, architecturally elaborate classical, romanesque, italianate or victorian gothic buildings such singers hill synagogue, in birmingham. however, not grand examples survive: instance dalston synagogue (counter-intuitively) in newington green, north london in last-mentioned style in poor repair congregation sold land building of apartment block , relocated in 1970.
