early life , education
born joel lipsky on december 31, 1915 in new york city, carmichael youngest son of charlotte schacht , louis lipsky, founder of american zionist movement. oldest brother, david (1907–1996) became publicist; middle brother, eleazar (1911–1993), lawyer, novelist, journalist, playwright , active zionist.
following graduation high school, sent year palestine. there began learning arabic before returning new york , attending columbia university. in england, chance meeting oxford don turned him read greek , russian @ oxford.
career
his first book, translation of memoir of russian revolution, helped carmichael land contract oxford university press. there, wrote numerous titles on christianity, arab history , russian history, , translated anna karenina new paperback edition. 1 book, death of jesus, translated 8 languages. carmichael editor of midstream, zionist magazine, 24 years, serving 1975–1988 , 1990-2001.
marriage , family
carmichael married twice: first journalist mary carr thomas, sculptor elizabeth de cuevas in 1960. had 3 children.
his granddaughter filmmaker emily carmichael.
death
carmichael died january 27, 2006 in manhattan.
