the first ice house in cedar falls built in 1858 near homestead of william sturgis, first permanent resident of black hawk county. destroyed in fire on october 22, 1921. hugh smith, owned cedar falls ice , fuel company, made plans present structure. completed in november 1921. first ice harvest began on january 10, 1922. building served ice house 1922 until smith lost business in 1934. cedar falls trust , savings bank took on building. used livestock barn , later flooded ice skating. in 1938 city of cedar falls purchased building , leased cedar falls boat club. occupied building until 1976 when building condemned. year cedar falls historical society decided save structure. after successful fund-raising campaign building renovated beginning in 1978, , ice house museum opened on june 24, 1979. building damaged in 2008 flood.
