the croix de guerre designed sculptor paul-albert bartholomé. medal 37 mm in size , in shape of maltese cross 2 swords criss-crossed through center. in center of front, profile of french republic crested phrygian cap. around portrait, words république française ( french republic ). on reverse of medal dates of conflict : 1939–1940, 1939–1945, or 1940.

the suspension , service ribbon of medal has red background crossed 4 green lines in center.
