anthem reprinted in june 1953 issue of pulp magazine famous fantastic mysteries.


initially, rand planned on publishing anthem magazine story or serial, agent encouraged publish book. submitted simultaneously macmillan publishers in america , cassell in england. both had handled previous novel, living. according leonard peikoff, cassell accepted immediately... macmillan turned down; comment was: author not understand socialism. american publisher turned down, , rand s agent unable sell magazine serial. cassell published in england in 1938.


after success of fountainhead, revised edition of anthem published in in 1946 pamphleteers, inc., small libertarian-oriented publishing house owned rand s friends leonard read , william c. mullendore. original english edition (cassell 1938) entered public domain in united states in 1966, due failure renew copyright after 28 years required copyright law. 50th anniversary edition published in 1995, including appendix reproduces cassell edition rand s handwritten editorial changes.


since publication in 1946, revised version of anthem has sold more 3.5 million copies.
