mabel born in sussex, england in 1536, sir anthony browne, knight of garter, master of horse, , first wife alice gage. paternal grandparents sir anthony browne, standard bearer of england , governor of queenborough castle, , lucy neville. mabel s maternal grandparents sir john gage , philippa guildford. had 5 brothers, including anthony browne, 1st viscount montagu, , 2 sisters. 1 of aunts elizabeth browne, lady-in-waiting anne boleyn.


mabel s mother died in 1540. when mabel 7 years of age, in 1543, father married elizabeth fitzgerald, irish noblewoman celebrated fair geraldine in sonnet henry howard, earl of surrey. brownes roman catholics, after dissolution of monasteries mabel s father enjoyed favour of king henry viii when granted estate of battle abbey in east sussex. mabel spent childhood there , @ cowdray house in west sussex, had come sir anthony s possession in 1542.


mabel s father died 6 may 1548, , widow married secondly edward clinton, 1st earl of lincoln.
