the public ministry (mp, ministério público) judiciary body responsible public prosecution , representation of portuguese state before courts. hierarchic organized body, composed of magistrates , headed attorney-general of republic (procurador-geral da república), being totally independent executive , other branches of government.


the superior body of public ministry procuradoria-geral da república (pgr, attorney-general s office), headed attorney-general. besides directing mp, pgr assures representation in 4 supreme courts: constitutional court, supreme court of justice, supreme administrative court , auditors court. representation done directly attorney-general, assisted vice-attorney-general , deputy attorneys-general.


the intermediate level bodies of mp 4 procuradorias-gerais distritais (district attorneys-general s offices) , 2 procuradorias-gerais de coordenação (coordinating attorneys-general s offices). first represent mp in relação courts, while last represent in central administrative courts.


the first level bodies of mp 23 procuradorias de comarca (comarca attorney s offices), represent in each of judicial courts of comarca.


one of main roles of public ministry guide criminal investigation in country. role, mp includes departments of investigation , prosecution, composed of attorneys specially dedicated investigation of serious crimes. there 1 central department in pgr , 1 of such departments in each of district attorneys-general s offices. criminal investigation, mp controls activity of judiciary police.
