the phillies, no. 2 seed in national league, faced off against wild card colorado rockies in first round of playoffs. cliff lee pitched complete game in opener of series, shutting out rockies through  8 ⁄3 innings before allowing single run in ninth. threw 113 pitches in game, in addition getting hit , stolen base in first postseason start. rockies evened series in second game, cole hamels left stadium wife, went labor first child. phillies staged comebacks twice bring them within run of tying game, not close door huston street saved game aaron cook.

after charlie manuel named pedro martínez game 3 starter, game postponed day due weather forecast of snow , record-low temperatures. postponement prompted manuel change plans, naming rookie left-hander j. a. happ new starter game. happ pitched 3 innings, allowing 3 runs, manuel brought joe blanton out of bullpen, pitched  2 ⁄3 innings , allowed 1 run. brad lidge, after 11 blown saves during regular season, preserved win phillies, 6–5 victory. in back-and-forth affair, phillies , rockies traded leads through game 4 @ coors field, phillies scored 3 runs in top of ninth win 1 run. combined sweeps in other 3 division series, 2009 became first year since implementation of wild card in 1995 4 championship series berths clinched on road.

the los angeles dodgers national league s no. 1 seed virtue of best record entering playoffs; thus, phillies traveled chavez ravine opener of playoffs second round, fifth postseason meeting between 2 clubs. james loney opened scoring dodgers solo home run in bottom of second inning, phillies answered five-run fifth inning, chasing starter clayton kershaw. manny ramírez two-run home run in bottom of inning made score 5–4, raúl ibañez followed three-run home run in top of eighth. lidge, appearing in third consecutive postseason game, notched third consecutive save. martínez started second game phillies, throwing 7 scoreless innings on 87 pitches. after departure, phillies used 5 bullpen pitchers 3 outs in eighth inning; pitchers allowed 3 hits , 2 walks, allowing 2 runs score. jonathan broxton saved second game dodgers, los angeles won, 2–1.

the series moved philadelphia third game, , phillies capitalized on home crowd immediately, scoring 4 runs in first inning of game. lee continued superb postseason performance eight-inning shutout performance, allowing 3 singles , stolen base. lee , batterymate ruiz had higher offensive production in game 3 (three hits in 6 at-bats, 3 runs scored, 1 run batted in) entire dodger lineup (three hits in twenty-seven @ bats, no runs scored). phillies won game, 11–0. in game 4, howard continued slug, hitting two-run home run off of former-phillie randy wolf in first inning; run batted in, tied lou gehrig s major league record of 8 consecutive postseason games rbi. dodgers came score 2 runs on defensive miscue in fourth inning, adding 1 run in fifth on matt kemp home run , 1 in sixth on casey blake single. phillies got 1 in bottom of sixth on victorino triple , single utley, held scoreless until bottom of ninth. los angeles closer broxton entered game in bottom of eighth—after george sherrill allowed 2 runners reach base—and coaxed werth fly out. broxton returned mound in bottom of ninth, inducing ground ball ibáñez before walking matt stairs , hitting ruiz. greg dobbs pinch-hit pitcher s spot, lining out third base. 2 outs , 2 runners aboard, jimmy rollins hit 99-mile-per-hour (159 km/h) fastball right-center field gap, scoring eric bruntlett (who had pinch-run) , ruiz. in fifth game, phillies hit 4 home runs, including 2 jayson werth, hamels allowed 3 runs in second start of series. phillies bullpen pitched  4 ⁄3 innings in game, allowing 1 run philadelphia defeated los angeles, 10–4. win clinched phillies first consecutive national league pennants in franchise history, , first back-to-back world series appearances national league franchise since atlanta braves in 1995 , 1996. howard named mvp of national league championship series.

after 80-minute rain delay, phillies scored first in second inning jayson werth s lead-off home run followed bases-loaded walk , sacrifice fly. in fourth inning, alex rodriguez hit ball down right field line, struck camera @ fence , ruled home run after review. nick swisher opened top of fifth inning double , scored on single center field andy pettitte. jeter followed single, , both , pettite driven in johnny damon double. j. a. happ replaced hamels , allowed solo home run swisher in sixth inning. werth answered second home run of game leading off bottom of sixth. mariano rivera recorded 38th career postseason save close out yankees second consecutive win.

the yankees opened scoring in first inning 2 runs, phillies answered back-to-back doubles shane victorino , chase utley in bottom of inning. phillies tied game in bottom of fourth ryan howard singled, stole second, , scored on single pedro feliz. replays showed howard did not touch home plate slid across; however, yankees did not appeal. swisher led off fifth inning walk, scoring on single derek jeter, , melky cabrera scored on single damon. park relieved blanton in seventh , held yankees scoreless. chase utley hit third home run of series in bottom of seventh 2 outs. dámaso marte struck out howard end inning. after game-tying home run feliz, lidge entered game in ninth , gave two-out single damon. teixeira batting, damon stole second , advanced third base uncovered due pull shift against teixeira. rodriguez put yankees ahead double left field, scoring damon. posada added lead single scored teixeira, had singled, , rodriguez. mariano rivera entered in bottom of ninth , notched second save of series.

the yankees scored first second straight game, utley gave lead philadelphia on three-run home run. werth , ibáñez drove in utley , howard in third inning, chased starter, burnett. david robertson allowed run score on carlos ruiz groundout. eric hinske, entered pinch-hitter, scored on ground out johnny damon. utley tied reggie jackson s record home runs in world series solo home run in seventh inning, fifth of series. howard struck out 12th time in series, tying willie wilson s 1980 record strikeouts in world series. ibáñez hit solo home run chase pitcher phil coke. after being hit in hand in first inning, victorino replaced defensively in eighth inning ben francisco. lee left game after allowing 2 runs score, , park gave sacrifice fly robinson canó add earned run lee s line. ryan madson entered in ninth close game, allowing 1 run on double play earning first career world series save.

the yankees scored first when matsui hit two-run home run rodriguez on base after walk. phillies responded triple ruiz, scored on sacrifice fly rollins in top of third inning. matsui added yankee lead bases-loaded single in bottom of inning, scoring jeter , damon. martínez relieved after 4 innings durbin, allowed ground rule double jeter, later scored on teixeira single. durbin hit rodriguez , relieved happ after recording 1 out. happ allowed two-run double matsui, fifth , sixth rbi of game tied world series record rbi in single game set bobby richardson in 1960 world series.

in sixth inning, howard s home run following walk issued utley brought game 7–3. after ibáñez hit double right field, joba chamberlain relieved pettitte, allowing no further runs in inning. in top of eighth inning, dámaso marte struck out howard, set new world series record strikeouts batter in single series (13). after strikeout, marte relieved rivera in non-save situation, allowed 1 hit , 1 walk before closing out game , yankees 27th championship.
