during period of ottoman rule in thessaly, main settlement in location of modern karditsa called sotira,. in 1810, english traveler william martin leake mentioned sprawling village named kardhítza, consisting of between 500-600 houses, of majority of inhabitants turkish.


karditsa incorporated new city in 1882, year after liberation ottoman empire.


during world war ii, resistance in thessaly fought elas. in march 12, 1943 karditsa first city in europe liberated nazi occupation in campaign fought elas.
