mostly instrumental, signature sound of krautrock mixed rock music , rock band instrumentation (guitar, bass, drums) electronic instrumentation , textures, described ambient music sensibility.


by end of 1960s, american , british counterculture , hippie movement had moved rock towards psychedelic rock, heavy metal, progressive rock , other styles (from scorpions rose prominence), incorporating, first time in popular music, socially , politically incisive lyrics. 1968 student riots in germany, france , italy had created class of young, intellectual continental listeners, while nuclear weapons, pollution , war inspired protests , activism. music had taken turn towards electronic avant-garde in mid-1950s.


these factors laid scene came termed krautrock, arose @ first major german rock festival in 1968 @ essen. american , british counterparts, german rock musicians played kind of psychedelia. same year, 1968, saw foundation of zodiak free arts lab in berlin hans-joachim roedelius , conrad schnitzler, further popularized psychedelic-rock sound in german mainstream.
