synopsis

arcadia



scene: arcadia,in greek countryside, in legendary antiquity.

diana, virgin huntress goddess, has become displeased arcadia , has let known through marriage of couple descended heavenly ancestors, 1 of whom faithful shepherd , wrath appeased. couple believed fit description hunter silvio, has no interest in love, being dedicated diana , interested in hunting, , shepherdess amarilli, in love shepherd mirtillo, ancestry unknown.


act 1

the shepherd mirtillo unhappy due great love amarilli, going have marry hunter silvio in order please goddess diana.


amarilli unhappy proposed marriage has fallen in love mirtillo, family background not known, although has not told him loves him. mirtillo overhears lamenting love him , woos her, rejects him duty marry silvio sake of common welfare.


mirtillo in such despair @ resolves on suicide. shepherdess eurilla in love mirtillo, prevents him killing himself, , offers try win amarilli him. eurilla interested in winning mirtillo herself.


silvio, hunter, has no interest in girls or getting married @ all, wishes remain chaste patroness goddess diana. yet shepherdess, dorinda, smitten silvio rejects love, sorrow.

in rocky grove, mirtillo sings himself sleep song in praise of beloved amarilli. slumbers, eurilla enters garland of flowers note adores , waiting there , places on body. when awakes, thinks must amarilli.


eurilla tells amarilli mirtillo has received love token , invitation amorous tryst girl, makes jealous.


meanwhile, dorinda continues pester silvio protestations of affection, , continues make clear not interested.


eurilla tells mirtillo love on way , should go nearby cave , wait her, does. eurilla fetches amarilli , tells can watch mirtillo other girl inside same cave, , leads amarilli too. 2 in cave together, eurilla go , tell law authorities arrest them illicit sex, arcadian law prescribes death female partner, amarilli executed, , eurilla have mirtillo own.

eurilla s scheme has been successful - amarilli has been condemned die unchastity. mirtillo begs allowed die in place refused. amarilli being led execution when chief priest of diana enters new decree goddess. mirtillo of divine parentage , faithful shepherd of prophecy. human sacrifice abolished, double wedding announced, mirtillo , amarilli silvio , dorinda. eurilla asks , receives forgiveness, curse lifted land, , rejoice.
