early life

he born in aix-en-provence on july 2, 1759.


career

at onset of french revolution conseiller @ parliament of aix-en-provence. elected second estate representative of sénéchaussée of aix-en-provence estates-general of 1789 (also elected aix comte de mirabeau, though nobleman elected third estate). following example of philippe, duc d orléans, joined third estate became national constituent assembly.


he elected president of national assembly 3 times (1–16 august 1790; 22 december 1790 – 4 january 1791; 10–27 may 1791) , second prolific speaker, addressing assembly on 497 occasions (only armand-gaston camus spoke more frequently). 1 of prominent partisans pressing constitutional monarchy, , supported faction known monarchiens. attempted royal flight varennes (20–21 june 1791) caused crisis of faith in monarchy, , inspired him vote majority suppress royal executive power. along adrien duport , françois denis tronchet selected conduct interview louis xvi in aftermath. after close of session national assembly remained in paris, founded large grocery business (épicerie), journalists of left dubbed him l Épicier .


accused of hoarding , suspected plotting royalist émigrés, emigrated himself, @ first great britain , switzerland, placed himself in service of comte de provence. in capacity became active royalist; through him british spymaster william wickham directed funds intended support counter-revolutionary propaganda. under french directory returned france in february 1797 take in hand electoral campaign of royalist party, success, though not elected council of 5 hundred.


after coup of 18 fructidor (4 september 1797) escaped arrest fleeing once more switzerland, , remained abroad decade, faithful comte de provence, proclaimed louis xviii royalists. after napoleon s victory @ wagram (july 1809), d andré permitted son antoine joseph maurice d andré serve in imperial army, while occupied himself establishing model farm near vienna.


with bourbon restoration followed louis xviii france, , pardoned defection, 1809-1814, , appointed general director of police, , superindendant of maison du roi.

he died @ aix-en-provence on july 16, 1825.
