Death Edward of Angoulême

after prolonged suffering, edward died of bubonic plague; although exact time of death not known, date of january 1371 commonly used. wigmore chronicle of 1370 states edward died around feast of saint michael [29 september] ; correct date.


the black prince found out edward s death after returned siege of limoges; grieved in heart, none can escape death. edward s loss bitter grief [the black prince , joan of kent] , increased severity of black prince s illness. edward had won reputation christ-like character, , in infancy, historians have been willing see seeds of high qualities distinguished father , grandfather, denied brother richard ii. black prince returned england joan , richard in 1371, , died there in 1376 of dysentery.


before black prince , family left england, left brother, john of gaunt, in charge of arranging edward s funeral, took place in bordeaux , attended of barons of gascony , poitou. edward s body exhumed in 1388/9 , transported england robert waldby, bishop of aire, acting under richard ii s orders. @ time edward buried @ chilterne langley, known children s langley, priory on estate of kings langley. between 1540 , 1607, church @ kings langley ruined; , edward had been re-buried @ church of austin friars 1598.


while richard not have remembered edward well, still recalled [his brother] pious affection. thus, edward featured on wilton diptych, small diptych depicts richard kneeling before virgin (represented joan of kent) , child (represented edward). diptych held @ national gallery of london.
