modal particles (abtönungspartikel) part of speech used in spoken german. these words affect tone of sentence instead of conveying specific literal meaning. typical examples of kind of word in german doch, mal, halt, eben, nun, schon, eh or ja. many of these words have more basic, specific meaning (e.g. ja yes , schon ), in modal use, meaning not directly expressed.
