in spring of 1979 whale departed groton mediterranean,. made stops in sousse, tunisia; la spezia, lamaddellena , naples, italy , tangier, morocco. while in mediterranean whale participated in fleet exercises. 1979-fall, 1980: whale in extended period of refit/repair (selected restricted availability), in floating drydock uss ardm-4 in groton, connecticut. after refloating, workups, , training, proceeded south torpedo proficiency exercises, stopping liberty @ port everglades, fl. go go dancers butch cassidy s greeted whale , crew on arrival, , heartily welcomed aboard. whale spent remainder of 1980 , 1981 on short training , test deployments, 1 of concluded thunderbuoy , whitefish exercises. fresh coat of paint, , new skipper, cdr e.d. morrow, whale proceeded mediterranean in june 1981, stopping on way @ cartagena, spain, proved liberty port on deployment. whale spent next 6 months in mediterranean sea, taking part in navy s defiance of libyan president mohammar khadaffi s line of death in gulf of sidra. whale made periodic up-keeps @ submarine tender orion, in la maddelena, sardinia. 1982 found whale home in groton, making frequent short training workup runs, honing crew s proficiency fine tune. in may 1982 whale proceeded on atlantic deployment, (pollywogs among crew becoming bluenoses on way), , later stop in faslane, scotland. whale earned battle e efficiency after deployment. 1983 whale had new skipper, captain james e. welsch. mid 1983 whale given double barrel patrol – north atlantic deployment followed abbreviated mediterranean patrol. due uss tullibee being unable handle commitments. deployment, dubbed nor-med run , quite active, port visits in holy loch scotland, toulon france, la spezia, , la maddalena, italy. uss whale left la maddalena on christmas day 1983 , returned groton in january 1984. 1984 spent doing keep, refit, drilling, , short training deployments, notably spending week in st croix, virgin islands. in january 1985, uss whale again went on patrol mediterranean, stops in holy loch scotland, brest france, la maddalena italy, rotterdam netherlands, prior whale s being temporarily reassigned puget sound naval shipyard @ bremerton, washington overhaul period starting in november 1985. while undergoing overhaul in 1986, uss whale crew members formed unit softball team, competed in , won northwestern pacific softball championship. crew of 120 compete against larger ships , commands, quite accomplishment.
