by 1800 small number of slaves had joined christian churches. free blacks in north had set networks of churches , in south slaves sat in upper gallery. central growth of community among blacks black church, first community institution established. black church- both expression of community , unique african-american spirituality, , reaction discrimination. church served neighborhood centers free black people celebrate african heritage without intrusion white detractors. church center of education. since church part of community , wanted provide education; educated freed , enslaved blacks. seeking autonomy, blacks richard allen (bishop) founded separate black denominations.


the second great awakening (1800-1830s) has been called central , defining event in development of afro-christianity.
