the official colors of utsa orange, white, , blue. colors of university of texas system have historically been orange , white. blue selected upon recommendation of student representative assembly (now student government association) in accordance board of regents rules , regulations, states institution may adopt 1 additional color used in connection athletic , other activities of institution.

the roadrunner, bird representative of texas hill country , american southwest, voted utsa mascot in 1977. rowdy roadrunner attends many university functions , games. on march 1, 2008, utsa athletics unveiled new logos during homecoming game against texas a&m university–corpus christi. athletic markings changed due noticeable similarities university of kansas jayhawk.

the alma mater created alan craven, former dean , professor of college of liberal , fine arts. music provided clarence ( joe ) stuessy, retired professor , former chair of department of music.

fiesta utsa, annual event held in april, began in 1978. first fiesta utsa attended on 1,000 students , included music, jalapeño eating contest, watermelon seed spitting contest, dunk tank, , other activities. fiesta utsa features dozens of booths set under sombrilla in carnival atmosphere. booths run registered student organizations , offer food, drinks , games. campus activities board sponsors bands , other musicians throughout day. fiesta utsa became kickoff event fiesta san antonio each spring, having been added official fiesta san antonio schedule in 1980. fiesta royalty present @ ribbon-cutting ceremony marks official beginning of fiesta.

homecoming has many traditions @ utsa. 1 of notable, annual golf cart parade, unique event utsa. student organizations band design , create decorated golf carts according year s homecoming theme, showing them off in front of audience of on 3,000 roadrunner fans. each submission constructed students @ golf cart decorating party, event held few days before in university center. parade has been official part of university s homecoming ceremonies since 1993. in 2004 combined rowdy rampage fireworks spectacular, alongside spirit rally , live music concert.
