Risk factors Uterine fibroid

1 risk factors

1.1 diet
1.2 genetics
1.3 familial leiomyomata

risk factors

some risk factors associated development of uterine fibroids modifiable. fibroids more common in obese women. fibroids dependent on estrogen , progesterone grow , therefore relevant during reproductive years.

diet

diets high in fruits , vegetables tend lower risk of developing fibroids. fruits, citrus, have greater protective benefit vegetables. normal dietary levels of vitamin d shown reduce risk of developing fibroids. no protective benefit has been found consumption of folate, whole grains, soy products, or fiber. no association between consumption of fat, eggs, dairy products has been shown increase risk of fibroids.

genetics

fifty percent of uterine fibroids demonstrate genetic abnormality. translocation found on chromosomes. fibroids partly genetic. if mother had fibroids, risk in daughter 3 times higher average.

researchers have completed profiling of global gene expression uterine fibroids. found few specific genes or cytogenetic deviations associated fibroids.

80-85% of fibroids have mutation in mediator complex subunit 12 (med12) gene.

familial leiomyomata

a syndrome (reed s syndrome) causes uterine leiomyomata along cutaneous leiomyomata , renal cell cancer has been reported. associated mutation in gene produces enzyme fumarate hydratase, located on long arm of chromosome 1 (1q42.3-43). inheritance autosomal dominant.
