the shoemaker building, formerly campus library.


a library/gym building constructed on campus in 1893, survived great fire of 1912; building, stood tydings hall stands, razed in 1958. new library building, called shoemaker library (now known shoemaker building), constructed in 1931 (named samuel m. shoemaker, chairman of board of regents 1916 1933), , served university s main library until construction of mckeldin library in 1958.


the university s library became federal depository library in 1925, status has held since. in 1965, library system became regional depository maryland, delaware, , district of columbia.
