galveston broadcasting company signs on kgbc

the u.s. federal communications commission (fcc) granted construction permit in august 1946 new station broadcast on 1540 kilohertz , serve community of galveston, texas. station began broadcasting under program test authority on february 1, 1947, , received original broadcast license in may 1947. chosen represent original owner james w. bradner s galveston broadcasting company, kgbc call sign assigned fcc. station has served galveston area since 1947. @ launch, station broadcast 1,000 watts of power , during daylight hours. in 1950, station added nighttime service, in directional array , @ 250 watts. station powers down @ night protect clear-channel station kxel in waterloo, iowa, skywave interference.


kgbc-fm launches

after 17 years of continuous operation galveston broadcasting company, kgbc sold harbor broadcasting company, inc., effective december 20, 1964. on february 11, 1968, kgbc s new owners launched fm sister station kgbc-fm (106.1 fm). in 1974, fm station sold, moved 106.5 fm, , re-licensed kufo . shifting ownership , declining fortunes, station became kxkx in 1979 , kqqk in 1986 before signing off forever , having license cancelled fcc in march 1989. of december 2011, 106.5 frequency occupied unrelated spanish-language religious station licensed kove-fm .


in 70s, kgbc s studios handed on over saturday mornings students in ball high school s radio , tv production class, taught rosalind roz k. dricks. high schoolers wrote , produced three-hour program, complete news , advertising. several students went on careers in journalism , entertainment after starting @ local radio station.


listeners 70s , 80s never forget sports director woody carson, society reporter francis kay harris, or galveston talking ladies.


cathy cundiff kgbc news director 1973 until 1978, when moved houston s khou, channel 11, remained until 2000. s manager houston livestock show , rodeo.


siga purchases kgbc

on february 20, 2002, prets/blum media company, inc., contracted sell kgbc siga broadcasting corporation. sale approved fcc on april 25, 2002, , transaction completed on may 9, 2002.


on september 13, 2008, hurricane ike made landfall on upper texas coast causing flooding , widespread damage. kgbc broadcast facilities suffered both flooding , damage, knocking station off air , keeping dark several weeks. station resumed broadcasting (albeit low power) on october 6, 2008, , returned full power operation on february 3, 2009. after spending of 2009 live , local broadcaster, station began leasing of airtime,starting january 1, 2010. station changed formats again classic hits.


kgbc stands more galveston broadcasting company . calls sign created mary sullivan in 1946, , stands keep galveston beaches clean .sullivan worked receptionist , book keeper @ kgbc many years. owners , partners on years pete miller, senator a.r. babe schwartz, dade moore , vandy anderson.anderson earned title of “the voice of galveston , general manager , leader. miller, schwartz, moore , anderson known harbor broadcasting co. company later sold prets , blum broadcasting , sold after short while siga broadcasting.
