trust metric marked tony scott s directorial debut on television. scott , series executive producer ridley scott wanted direct episode while between movies. tony scott wanted direct janus list felt not due schedule. told series producers let him direct trust metric .


scott wanted reinvent show s effects. specifically, scott wanted change show s momentum , pace instead of maintaining status quo. in order maintain acting momentum, did not leave actors time between scenes. capture more natural character moments, scott refused hold rehearsals , began filming actors came on set. give title shot new look, skip chaisson changed color shot @ end of scene black , white. added grainy appearance shot. chaisson used slo-mo , freeze-frame increase intensity of storytelling.


he changed several sets texture. scott renovated sets eppes living room , charlie s office, , added classroom set. @ 1 point, removed wall , ceiling of interrogation room s set capture specific camera angle.


scott asked not touch hair give different look. prior scott s arrival, series producers sent him reel showing actors hair styles previous 3 seasons. commented , made suggestions actors hair.


trust metric took 9 days film, 3 days on set , 6 days on location. numb3rs location managers john armstrong , tony rizza (location manager) , scott s own location manager janice polley spent 7 days finding locations shoot episode. crew filmed short arrest scene @ beginning of episode @ real-life pool hall in north hollywood.


usually, numb3rs had 1 action scene per episode. due scott s desire film season 4 season premiere, writer ken sanzel included 3 action scenes. 1 ambush scene on street, , 1 aboard freighter. originally, ambush scene supposed crash scene. while discussing story, sanzel , producers realized crash not meet standards. sanzel changed scene shootout/explosion. after obtaining approval california highway patrol , caltrans, crew filmed ambush scene under i-10. gang instructed shoot car. due time constraints in setup, special effects director tom bellissimo placed explosives on armored car, totaled in final explosion. film crew used imo, special type of camera destroyed, film explosion.


for harbor scenes, crew spent 1 day filming dialogue , second day filming boarding of freighter. scott used storyboard outline how scene filmed on course of day. in freighter scene, 4 people became involved in gunfight aboard freighter. due size of boat, risk injury increased. filming occurring on light day, filming of scene better producers expected.


casting

tony scott brought in several people appear in episode. val kilmer, worked director tony scott in top gun, cast attorney mason lancer. scott called kilmer , asked him in episode. continuing trend had started in several of previous films, scott brought in several members of real-life vietnamese gang. felt gang members appearance , real-life experiences added authenticity not replicated through makeup , acting. numb3rs series aerial cameraman david nowell called in play fbi surveillance pilot film episode. nowell had worked scott in top gun.
