the harbour established sometime after regulation of danube in 1875 on right-hand bank of danube. donaudampfschiffahrtsgesellschaft commanded monopoly on cargo , passenger transport on danube @ time, seems company sole owner of entire harbour until end of world war , subsequent collapse of austria-hungary. after time, shipping companies of other states on danube had berths warehouses, storerooms, , sheds necessary equipment load , unload ships. city of vienna owned refrigerated warehouses here.


farthest upstream oil , petrol storage facility. stood on section of river bank approximately 3 kilometres long , site of 50 tanks belonging oil companies vacuum, shell, nova, fanto ag , redeventza.


the river harbour occupied stretch of river bank 12 kilometres long. offered ships no protection whatsoever when river flooded or froze over. harbour connected surrounding area donauuferbahn , handelskai, ran parallel danube, thereby limiting space available harbour thin strip 75 metres across.
