with addition of more on-campus housing in recent years, campus life @ utsa has evolved become more active. before basketball games, tail-gate parties , body painting in school s colors common. there many traditions well, including best fest , fiesta utsa, both events students organizations raise funds while providing entertainment , food student body.

utsa offers array of selections on-campus housing:

chaparral village ( chap ): apartment-like dorms 2 or 4-bedroom configurations housing 1,000 students. amenities include paid utilities, high-speed internet access, , cable. 4 neighborhood centers provide student residents laundry , dishwashing appliances.
chisholm hall ( chisholm ): oldest housing complex on campus, opened in 1986; four-story dormitory approximately 500 student residents. offers rooms in 1 , 2-person configurations, activity center, study lounges, , community kitchen.
laurel village ( laurel ) : utsa s second newest on-campus housing complex, completed in 2008, houses 678 students. similar in design chaparral village, laurel residents able utilize chap s pool, hot tub, , outdoor picnic areas.
alvarez hall ( alvarez ): four-story dormitory , newest housing complex on campus, opened in fall of 2013, 618 students. situated next chaparral village, rec fields, , convocation center. students organized special interest communities , including engineering living learning community, leadership , service lifestyle community, , honors college , terry scholar community.
university oaks ( u oaks or oaks ): apartments 1, 2, , 4-bedroom configurations; second-oldest housing complex on campus. amenities include paid utilities, high-speed internet access, , cable. rowdy houses provide residents 24-hour laundry service , pool access. u oaks houses approximately 1,400 students in total.

activities

at heart of student life 374 student organizations represent diverse array of niches on campus. among prominent of groups sponsored organizations receive funding university student services fee. these sponsored student organizations rsos (registered student organizations) may use utsa in name.

be responsible roadrunner (barr) organization supported office of student activities, focusing on educating student body on issues relating health. barr conducts events on campus such alcohol awareness week, thirsty thursdays, safe spring break , party on paseo, garnered outstanding alcohol abuse prevention award @ 2010 bacchus network general assembly.

the campus activities board (cab) largest student program board on campus. serves foster traditions , community @ university coordinating large-scale events such best fest, fiesta utsa , various homecoming functions.

student government association (sga) official voice of university s student body. officers , committees reflect of united states federal government, utilizing three-branch system. student government hosts university life awards , large celebration in ballroom recognizes excellence in leadership throughout campus. students considered members of sga, due both fact activities subsidized through student services fee , represents views of entire student body.

the college democrats , college republicans @ utsa both date late 1970s. 2 organizations have brought notable public officials campus such bill white, congressman joaquin castro, congressman pete gallego, judge juanita vasquez-gardener, state senator joe j. bernal, councilman john clamp, , senator bob krueger.

greek life

about 3% of both undergraduate men , women members of fraternities , sororities. greek life @ utsa directed 4 governing bodies: panhellenic council (6 chapters), interfraternity council (6 chapters), national pan-hellenic council (4 chapters), , multicultural greek council (8 chapters). greek life first established in 1977 , since has contributed student life around campus.

the interfraternity council (ifc) oversees men s social fraternities. member chapters include tau kappa epsilon, alpha tau omega, kappa sigma, lambda chi alpha, pi kappa phi, sigma pi. texas xi chapter of phi delta theta, founded in 1990, being re-established on campus under ifc. organizations in ifc belong either north-american interfraternity conference or fraternity leadership association. sigma phi epsilon, university s oldest fraternity, , phi gamma delta both booted off campus in 2011 , 2009, respectively. alpha lambda tau, fraternity homosexual men received national attention, governed under ifc while active.

the panhellenic council (phc) oversees women s social sororities of alpha omicron pi, alpha sigma alpha, gamma phi beta, phi mu, sigma kappa , zeta tau alpha.

the national pan-hellenic council (nphc) collaborative organization of 9 historically african american, international greek lettered fraternities , sororities. 7 of 9 greek organizations active @ utsa: alpha kappa alpha, delta sigma theta, omega psi phi, kappa alpha psi, phi beta sigma, zeta phi beta , sigma gamma rho.

rotc programs

utsa has 1 of extensive reserve officers training corps (rotc) programs in united states , nation s sixth largest air force rotc program on 240 cadets. in 2009, school s air force rotc detachment won right of line award, prestigious award among air force rotc units. ranking first in southwest region out of 36 detachments producing second lieutenants in air force. @ national level, (among 144 detachments), utsa ranked distant second behind purdue university. utsa has large air force rotc program among hispanic serving institutions . in 2009, afrotc unit awarded 36 slots field training compared texas a&m university, had 32.

the paisano

the paisano student-run newspaper of university. has received numerous awards columbia scholastic press association, winning gold medal in 2000. paisano has remained independent of university administration since inception in 1981 , publishes issues every tuesday.
