in 1872, george atkinson left church begin missionary work. 1880 named superintendent of missions of congregational churches of oregon , washington territory. traveled throughout region, , credited coining phrase “inland empire” describe eastern regions of oregon , washington. in 1885, district split, , atkinson remained in charge of oregon section until death in portland on february 25, 1889. buried @ river view cemetery in portland.
