the monteith district, located on west side of downtown albany, named after walter , thomas monteith, founders of albany. after arriving in oregon new york in 1847, monteith brothers completed first frame house in albany in 1849, serves museum , said authentically restored pioneer era home in oregon. of earlier history centers around monteith house.


the monteith district contains number of churches. former united presbyterian church, known whitespires , located @ corner of washington , fifth. built in 1891 , noted stained glass windows , carpenter gothic details. spire highest point in albany.


in 1851, monteith family built , owned magnolia flouring mills along calapooia river. mill in operation, first boat ever travel upper willamette river, multnomah, arrived in albany, thereby increasing albany s shipping potential manufacturing , farming industries.


the monteith historic district placed on national register of historic places on february 29, 1980. time period of significance of albany’s historic districts expanded in 2000 1849 1915 1849 1945 capture resources , architectural styles constructed between 1915 , 1945 reflect growth , development of albany. monteith district expanded in november 2008 add 78 properties on southwest corner of original boundary include cohesive collection of mid-twentieth century residential buildings. many distinct architectural styles grace district. included federal, craftsman, classical revival, gothic revival, italianate, queen anne, french second empire, stick, eastlake, colonial revival, rural vernacular, transitional box, bungalow, american renaissance, depression/world war ii cottages, , eclectic hybrids combine elements of these styles.
