the csun botanic garden located in southeast quad, near intersection of zelzah avenue , nordhoff street. part of biology department university curriculum, , regionally important demonstration garden , educational resource community. has new focus projects plants usable regionally local sustainable landscaping using sustainable gardening techniques , studying , planting ethnobotany insights , links. 1 of few remaining historic (circa 1920s) orange groves thriving on southeastern campus quad. citrus industry formerly had groves covering of san fernando valley. rows of large eucalyptus trees, historic windbreaks agricultural fields late 19th century, found towering on perimeters of campus, surviving planners developing campus expansions valor.

oviatt library provides educational, cultural , information services , resources students , faculty. primary mission support , supplement classroom , independent learning; facilitate student , faculty research; , provide students lifelong skills in identifying, locating, evaluating , synchronizing information.


all library materials housed in delmar t. oviatt library, 234,712-square-foot (21,805.5 m) state-of-the-art facility. there on 1,600 seats in-house study. of note learning commons, creative media studio, 4 computer equipped library instruction labs, , on 200 computer workstations devoted library information resources. specially equipped computer workstations located throughout library individuals disabilities, including 4 assistive technology equipped study rooms students. during fall , spring semesters, building open 90 hours week. library maintains own server , web pages providing access online electronic information , archives 24 hours day students , public @ oviatt library digital collections. library maintains own as/rs (automatic storage , retrieval system) capacity of 1.7 million volumes..


the oviatt library has physical collection containing 1.3 million volumes, of on 1 million books, , on 245,000 bound periodical volumes. library subscribes on 84,000 online journals, 200 online databases , more 500,000 ebooks. microform collection contains 3.1 million pieces. there on 14,000 sound recordings , on 60,000 film , video recordings. special collections & archives section of oviatt library has large collection of materials on human sexuality—possibly second largest private collection on human sexuality behind kinsey institute. in addition, teacher curriculum center provides circulating collection of curricular materials education students , local educators.


the library heavily used, 2.4 million uses of web pages annually, annual gate count of 1.4 million, , on half million interactions per year library personnel.

valley performing arts center

the valley performing arts center performance venue completed in 2011 @ cost of $125 million. 166,000 sq. ft. house 1,700-seat 3 tier concert hall , 175-seat black box theater, rehearsal rooms, academic , production support spaces, classrooms, , lecture hall. in 2017, younes nazarian , wife donated $17 million rename valley performing arts centre younes , soraya nazarian center performing arts.


university student union

the university student union or usu, non-profit student organizations strives better college experience. usu provides variety of involvement opportunities, programs, services, , job opportunities.


veteran resource center

the veteran resource center (vrc) located within university student union (usu). vrc designated area veteran students seek camaraderie , support transition military service academia. vrc has variety of resources such as: several desktop computers, rest area, sitting area, , tv community use. vrc open csun students , not need veteran in order access center or resources.


a valuable service provided veteran resource center mentoring program. veteran mentor program provides support , excellent resources veteran students. goal veterans transition military service college life students @ csun. mentor program meet veteran throughout semester, offering referrals , serve positive role models. program provides shared experiences, connection other csun students , programs.


sustainability on campus

sustainability has become work in progress on campus. our world experiencing environmental issues csun , students have been working on maintaining sustainable campus in last thirty years. technologies advance , more sustainable practices introduced csun adapt these new habits


three phases of sustainability @ csun

phase 1: 1980 s - 2008



1982 - energy manager , physical plant management director had opportunity rebuild campus after 1995 earthquake ideas of orienting new buildings , strictures towards energy efficiency.
in 2003, university installed first set of solar panels 225 kw capacity, becoming largest installment compared other university in california @ time. following in 2005 second installation of solar panels added campus obtaining 467 kw capacity.

recycling program


starting off student action in 70 s designated drop-off center recyclable items. expanding popularity throughout years 2000 expansion , increase in recyclable items admitted program. starting student leadership activity recycling facility , operations operated associated students.


phase ii : institute sustainability (2007-2009)


2007 , 2008 faculty began focus on campus sustainability involved campus participation. on october 27, 2008 institute of sustainability approved provost s council. institute of sustainability not rely on basic sustainability practices incorporates insight on energy , waste, education, , research. 2008 csun joined association advancement of sustainability in higher education. phase iii : campus sustainability network


in 2009 csun inherited sustainability concepts university curriculum. in 2009 new minor in sustainability developed , became available students in fall 2011. additional curriculum offerings include liberal studies degree , path general education. in january 2011 csun opened doors valley performing arts center 1 of 2 environmentally friendly , efficient buildings on campus. second being usu s student recreation center opened in january 2012 both earning leed gold certification.

oasis wellness center

the oasis wellness center located beneath usu computer lab , next plaza pool. oasis wellness center opened in fall semester of august 2015 sole purpose of providing students place of peace , tranquility in order achieve academic success. programs , services provided @ oaisis wellness center include massage therapy, power-napping sleep pods, appointment, nutrition classes , yoga. oasis wellness center open csun students.


csun food pantry

the csun food pantry s ultimate goal students in need providing basic emergency necessities food , personal care items. s free of cost no questions asked. s students in need academic success isn t affected these situations. having on 40,000 students on campus service opened in august 2017. center behind csun bookstore. open csun student, staff/faculty , local community members.

national center on deafness

the national center on deafness established in 1972 way serve deaf students @ university. support services such sign language interpreters, real-time captioners, , notetakers coordinated center, serving location of academic advisement , gathering of deaf students. 2008 fall semester, approximately 200 deaf students served national center on deafness.


film , television shoots

because of proximity hollywood , diverse array of modern architecture, campus has long been attractive filming location motion picture , television productions. example 1966 film glass bottom boat, parts of sierra hall , engineering building temporarily dressed nasa facilities. has appeared in american idol, arrested development, ringer, chuck, dexter, name earl, csi: crime scene investigation, criminal minds, commander in chief, van wilder, 6 feet under, karate kid, battlestar galactica, office, mcmillan & wife, son in law, bring on: fight finish, legally blonde 2, buffy vampire slayer, roswell, nick cannon show, quincy, m.e., georgia rule, , sky high (in oviatt library prominently featured). barry levinson-directed happened filmed @ oviatt library , featured robert de niro , sean penn. pilot of remake of television series knight rider filmed car chase on campus, stood in stanford university. during spring break 2008, library served starfleet academy star trek (the 2009 version). parking lots north of campus featured in movie superbad. in september 2014, csun s matador bookstore , oviatt library served backdrops movie friends, starring zac efron. in fall of 2016, csun s citrus hall, jerome richfield hall, , sierra quad featured in television series lucifer.
